Game – The Arrogant Bunny

Off to dream land, our bunny enjoys the fantasy of being a pirate on the high seas, trying to climb the never ending masts of a sinking ship.  The arrogant bunny himself is that overly positive friend who almost comes off as antagonistic, but always optimistic and full of hope and ambition.

About the Bunny

The Arrogant Bunny is a little fun loving mischievous rabbit who can’t help but see the world filled with unlimited possibilities and big dreams.  His over the top positivity can sometimes get on others nerves though.  The overall intention for myself was to learn how to develop an IP.  I want to make a series of games with the character at the center so I can keep the momentum between games.  The intention is also to create a multi media storyline outside of the games, in a web comic series that tells the adventures of the Bunny.

The Upside of Arrogance

The way I see arrogance as far as the bunny is concerned is this:  the plausibility of aspiration is based on the listener.  The bunny believes that anything is possible, and no one can convince him otherwise.  Sometimes he succeeds.  Sometimes it’s a failure.  But the bunny perpetually sees the value in trial and error, of enjoying the journey, that none of this can get him down.  To him, the arrogance is confidence that the journey is worth taking.

However, when his friends and family see him, they think he’s ridiculous, out of touch, and pursuing impossible dreams.  But then again, there’s no telling what impossible feats can be surpassed unless someone is willing to believe it possible.  In their realist minds though, the bunny seems nothing but arrogant, believing he is capable of more than he is.  Sometimes the bunny’s positivity can be grating, and challenging to their world view, but every so often the bunny does get through to them, and maybe helps the realists dream a little bigger too.

Pirates?

The current game in development is a dream sequence, so none of that backstory above actually applies to gameplay.  In developing an IP, I’m not looking to imprint this themeing into everything.  This game is just the bunny having fun, dreaming of being a pirate on a sinking ship.  No matter how well or poorly the bunny does, he will wake up and celebrate the victory before going back to bed.

One More Time

This is one of those Flappy Bird-esque gratification cycle styles of games.  The player is completing an action that is generally simply with single touch controls, but the gameplay is much more difficult to master, giving them a sense that they should be able to get this quickly.  And thus, “wait, no, one more time” will happen over and over.

Additionally, the multiplier continues without a limit.  2, to 4, to 8, to 16, etc.  This can yield insanely high scores over a short period of time.  They player can potentially max out the signed double int value if they can keep a run of about 5 minutes.  If this happens, they win and get a single carrot that remains on the main screen of the game.

This also makes it so that when a player does well, their score is disproportionately better than when they died quickly, making gratification scale exponentially.
