Floating Caves – Level Design Doc

Level Description

Strewn across the sky exists a once unified cluster of caves, now linked only by scattered rocks.  Large machines work to burrow through the rock and exhume valuable minerals from the dangerous terrain.  The high winds of the area are being harnessed to help move the rocks and power the excavation machines.

The Floating Caves have recently become a hostile place, forcing the miners to abandon the excavation effort.  The plant life has become vicious, and the winds have grown so fierce it has torn much of the excavation equipment apart.

Mechanics/Hazards

Air Current

Air currents are visually represented by moving wind “streamers”.

Vertical

When the player jumps into a vertical air current, they are ejected upwards.
Jumping into the vertical air current will renew the player’s double jump.
• From the player’s height of entry, they will be lifted twice their jumping height until they leave the current.  Re-entering the same current while mid-air, before touching the ground, will not set a new entry height (to prevent exploiting vertical movement.

Horizontal

The following objects caught in the horizontal air current will be pushed in the direction of the air flow.

Enemies

Boulders

Boulders are platforms and hazards that are twice the size of the player and can be influenced by air currents.

Hovering Boulders

Hovering Boulders are held in place by a vertical air current.
When a player stands on the boulder, it will begin to sink.  The player can jump repeatedly to return the boulder to its maximum height.
The boulder bobs slightly when the player is not standing on it.

Thrown Platform Boulders

Sometimes a boulder will fall into the opening of an air current’s shaft and become lodged.  When this happens, it will remain there for a moment before being ejected at high speed.
The player can ride these boulders when they eject.
When the boulder collides with a wall it will crumble and the player will fall down safely to the surface below it.

Excavation Cargo Boxes

A series of cargo boxes hauling rocks moves along a track.  The player can stand on the boxes as they move along the conveyor.

Cargo Boxes

The boxes move along the track.
The boxes can fall off the track.

There are a number of dirty machines around the level failing to operate.  Attack the machine to break up the dirt.

Box that contains a character accessory.

Damageable

Weeds

Destroying the weed is part of the player’s objectives.

Dirty Machines

A broken down machine in need of maintenance.  Hitting the machine will clean it and cause it to function again.  Needed for objective.

Crystal Growth

Large naturally occurring crystals to block player path and view.

Small Metal Boxes

Small box, when destroyed it minerals or health.

Treasure Chest

Yields minerals.
